LOVE | SIFF Film Review

by Danielle Robbins

Love is an insightful story based on the human condition. It centers on astronaut, Lee Miller, who is living aboard a space station in the year 2039. There is a malfunction with the equipment and he gets cut off from any communications with Earth. The story shows the need for human interaction and what becomes of a man when he gets cut off from the social need inherent in all human beings.

The First Grader | SIFF Film Review

by Danielle Robbins

For every flaw that is in The First Grader you can’t help, but think, “but, but, old man going to elementary school!” and it’s all made up for.

The First Grader was the Seattle International Film Festival opening film this year. It is the story of an 84 year old Mau-Mau freedom fighter, Maruge, in Kenya who wishes to go to primary school to learn to read. He has received a letter, but cannot read it. He hears that the Kenyan government has announced that education is now free to all and Maruge shows up to learn. The film tries to point out against tribalism and to show the power of literacy.

Krain Corner Inn | Restaurant Review

by Danielle Robbins

Off of highway 169 lies a cute restaurant that has been a place to meet and eat in the town of Enumclaw, WA for as long as I can remember. The building has been around for nearly 100 years and was once an Inn. Krain Corner Inn can only be described as country quant and it lives up to this description with its small town hospitality and décor. In 2009 it faced a huge loss and were forced to almost close their doors due to repairs that were being done on a nearby bridge that took nearly a year to finish. Despite the set back the restaurant continues to serve it’s guests and made it through the many months of construction. Now it can be seen with the hustle and bustle it once had.

Cookbook Challenge | Cake Pops

by Danielle Robbins

Cake pops take way more time than you think. My advice to you is to read the entire recipe before beginning. After rolling your cake balls they need to be put in the refrigerator for a few hours and preferably overnight. So word to the wise: plan ahead.

Hanna | Film Review

by David Robbins

“Three Bullets.”

It seems as though Hollywood is in a “young women who kick ass” renaissance. Kick-Ass, Sucker Punch, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Death Proof, and to a lesser extent Super, just to name a few. The latest entry into this very specific sub-genre is Hanna, starring Saoirse Ronan (whose name is impossible to deduce without hearing her say it). The film keeps the action quotient high, without sacrificing any emotional integrity. Its structure is about as “action movie” you can get, but the way the film plays on these motifs is what set it apart.
